This is a wholesome coming-of-age story and friends-to-lovers romance. It veers really close to heart-breaking at several points, though. It’s about Lily Hu, a younge Chinese-American woman who lives in San Francisco in the 50s; so, it takes place after recent interment of Japanese-Americans during World War II and within close proximity to peak McCarthyism. Given that backdrop and it, well, being the 50s… I was really touched by Lily’s refusal to repress, and her insistence on exploring and understanding, herself as she gradually learns about life outside of the heteronormative. I didn’t realize this book is marketed as young-adult fiction until I was almost finished with it. That, of course, doesn’t really matter. I only mention it so I can say that I’m glad the teens have access to role models and stories like this. I saw piles of them front-and-center at mainstream book stores like Barns & Noble.
