Aimee Joubert, or “The Young Woman,” as the narrator refers to her almost as frequently, is on a killing spree. In Fatale, you follow along as she wreaks havoc upon the port town of Bleville— almost immediately after claiming her previous victims. It’s short— less than 100 pages. It is absolutely worth your time to track down a copy to so you can read this somewhat insane tale.

My favorite moment comes early in the book when the colorful character Baron Jules, mere pages after he’s introduced, is hauled out of a party by the police commisioner while laughing and screaming

I don’t give a fuck! … I’ll be back to piss all over the place… You’re all done for.

I also learned an interesting definition of “pacific,” which I previously thought only ever referred to the ocean, but when used as an adjective means “having a soothing appearance or effect.”

The baron grabbed the doctor by the lapels and shook him in a rather pacific way.

I think this book made its way onto my stack by way of one of personal canon’s monthly roundups.
